CONGRATULATIONS
NEWTON ST CYRES!!
(Left to right: Christine Fraser, Lady Emma Fellowes,Cllr Liz Outridge, Mayor of Torquay, Julie Furniss, Cathy Yate)
‘Team’ Newton St Cyres entered RHS Britain in Bloom for the first time this year. We were in the Pennant (small) Village category and from the Map on the Newton Wonder ‘Britain in Bloom’ website, you can see the 16 points across the village that were part of the Judging Route. Sixteen?!
That in itself is amazing…
Judging took place on 1 July. The two Judges (Bob Ollier and Barbara Hannam from Newquay) spent 2.5 hours judging – and then a further hour enjoying a wonderful lunch by Jocelyn and the Adonai Team in the village Hall! Did the lunch swing it for us?! Who knows.
Then, at the SW Regional Awards at the Riviera Centre, Torquay on 8 October, Newton St Cyres was awarded:
GOLD
for the Village Entry
BEST
Village in Devon
BEST
New Entry
Level 4 (out of 5)
for Newton St Cyres School
BEST
South West Native Planting for the Arboretum
CPRE South West Regional Environmental Award
Newton St Cyres Arboretum
-
In addition to the list of awards above, Newton St Cyres was also nominated for BEST Portfolio and BEST School.
(The Portfolio is on the Newton Wonder Website).
We hoped the village would do well but simply could not believe it when award after award was announced!
(The Judges’ detailed report is on this website.)
On Saturday 11 October the Arboretum Coffee Morning hosted ‘The Big Reveal’! This was a chance for people to see all the awards, the Gold banner, and talk to the Crediton Courier about all the village projects. And BBC Radio Devon invited us to talk about the awards – and they featured Newton St Cyres in their Saturday 12 noon News Bulletin. Fame at last!
