The Boniface Trail
The Boniface Trail Association remains committed to working hard to establish the creation of an all purpose path from Crediton to Exeter through Newton St Cyres, suitable for cyclists, pedestrians and wheelchair and mobility scooter users. The Association is a regular working group of interested parties, including two Newton St Cyres Parish Councillors. The Association gained Charitable status earlier this year. The main working group currently meets once every six weeks on average.
The group has from January this year publicized a web link to a devised questionnaire and web site, and to date has received around 1,000 responses favourable responses, which indicate that any form of shared use path will be a significant bonus. The favoured planned route will be to follow as closely as possible the A377, making use of its amenities, and of course providing a key link to Newton St Cyres..
A public consultation was held in Newton St Cyres Parish Hall on 16 July 2016. This was very well attended by over 80 interested members of the public who came from Sandford, Newton St. Cyres, Crediton, Copplestone and Exeter, and this showed an overwhelming level of support and encouragement.
County and District Councillors have also expressed their support for the scheme. The working group is attempting to liaise with the District and County Council with a view to placing the scheme in the relevant wider public strategic plans.
The immediate aim of the Association is to advance Phase 1 of the project from Smallbrook to Newton St Cyres, Half Moon and Langford Bridge, with work on the further phases to link up to Crediton and Exeter to follow in due course. The scheme has met with support from local landowners and the next objective of the Association is to proceed to formal legal agreements with landowners for the first phase, followed by an application for planning permission for the first phase. The Association has engaged a civil engineer who is experienced in cycleways.
The Association has currently in reserve a number of small grant donation to enable it to progress its initial work. Longer term funding proposals include Landfill Tax Credits, “5p shopping bag” sustainable grants, developers’ contributions under planning agreements, Lottery, Heritage, business sponsorship and charitable donations.
A website will be up and running shortly. In the meantime if you require further information, please e-mail bonifacetrail@gmail.com
