Newton St Cyres’ 300 Duck Race
Easter Saturday 26th March 2016 Our latest Newton St Cyres 300 Duck Race was a feast of yellow quacking, competitive racers, tearing down the River Shuttern from the Pump Street bridge towards a thrilling finish several metres downstream. A blast from an obliging cornet prompted the start – 300 ducks poured down from the bridge and “SPLASH” - they were off! To rousing cheers, away they bobbed, a host of ducks bumping, wobbling and turning about, following the gentle flow before tumbling into the rushing weir, under the bridge and out of sight. Distant cries indicated the arrival of feisty leaders lurching along the curving swell and towards the final bend. To excited cries, they floated past the bunting finish line into the canny nets of Will and Roger, our intrepid duck-catchers. All 300 made it safe and sound – no injures nor grumbles from our brave racers. The winner - Laurie! Laurie wins a £25 voucher from the Beer Engine. Horray! 2nd prize went to Family Singleton who win an Easter egg from Tescos. Another horray! The prize for the slowest duck (and it finished…) was to Family Taylor. They won a box of Quality Street from Emma. A well done for not giving up! Horray! News hot off the press – we’ve just heard that Laurie is to auction her prize at The Beer Engine to raise even more money for our poor, cold church. BIG thank you Laurie! And so, to date, a GRAND TOTAL OF £390.50 was raised towards a new central heating system for our church. That is a BIG WOW. Well done, one and all, thank you to all our very generous donators. THANK YOU to all the lovely children, families and friends who turned up on a classic, stormy, rainy Easter Saturday. Finally, thank you for buying a duck. Quack! Happy Easter! Emma |
