A Short Note from the Newton St Cyres Twinning Circle
Another year, another set of fantastic happy twinning memories. But to start a sad note, one of our founding members Doug West passed away this year, - he will be missed.
As every year, we have had a great time enjoying ourselves having great fun while raising funds. Stalwart events such as our, Chinese take away and Wine Tasting etc. were supplemented by 'Play your cards right' organised by Lorraine & Keith Mitchell, a garden party organised by Ken & Sheila (Free Pimms!!) and a superb Newton Treasure Hunt organised by Liz Ouldridge. Liz also organises the most unique wine tasting event and is also our treasurer. Another first was an excellent evening when we visited the Crediton Coffee Company for a very informative talk and free tasting; all those attending really enjoyed it.
The highlight of our year was, of course, the Twinning trip. This year it was our turn to we receive our guests from Rot in Normandy in June. We decided not to organise a formal visit and planned local events without the need to book coaches etc., each member being responsible for organising their guests’ travel arrangements as well as for hosting. From the many remarks made, both from by our guests and members, the weekend was a great success. The weekend included a guided tour of Exeter by a French speaking Red Coat, an evening meal and dance in the village hall and a wonderful Sunday at Sidmouth, which included a great meal.
Eating, drinking, having a fun time and enjoying good company does not just happen! Twinning only works because of some behind the scenes work by volunteers. As well as those already mentioned, big thanks to the committee and the many members willing to contribute their time (and wonderful food).
We are now about to start planning our next visit to France in the summer, and are planning to reach out to plan events with some other local Twinning Societies. Why do you not come and join us? We are always on the lookout for new ideas and members. Why not get in touch with our Chairman Eric Fee on 01392 851 595 or secretary Lorraine Mitchell on 01392 851 596 to find out more?
