Newton St Cyres Revels 2016
Picture
The Newton Revels is a bi-annual event organised by a large number of volunteers from Newton St Cyres. This year’s event was held on the afternoon of Sunday 3rd July which fortunately was bright and sunny following a slightly drizzly morning.
A very large crowd joined in the festivities and were highly entertained by the excellent Joth Taylor and his Band, a demonstration by the local ZUMBA experts and a dance performance by Newton St Cyres Primary School.

In addition there were demonstrations by the NSC Football Club, Cricket Club and of course the fun sports organised by the NSC School.

Attractions included the Giant Inflatable Challenge, Up-Close Magician Mark Leveridge, Spangles the Clown as well as a number of sports including Archery, Target Golf and Petanque.

And of course there was lovely food provided by the Village Hall Team and their fabulous Hog Roast, Church Teas and Cakes and the French Café which was run by the Twinning Group. There was also a large number of local charities and organisations who set up stalls, displays of actual Vintage Cars, working Model Trains, History Group, Friends of NSC School, Friends of the Arboretum as well as Geoff Jackson and his model car and tractor display.

We were very fortunate to have St Johns Ambulance on duty and were joined by the Devon Fire Service complete with 5 Firefighters and a full size Fire Engine.

The Newton Revels has two aims. Firstly to provide the villagers and the wider spread community with an afternoon of Fun For All The Family and secondly to raise funds for and by local charitable organisations.

We are very grateful to the very numerous local organisations and businesses who provided over 40 exciting Draw Prizes and to the several hundred visitors who came along to enjoy the Newton Revels. And to Bernaville Nurseries who supported the printing of the brochure.

Our sincere thanks go to the very hardworking Organising Committee and to the very numerous (almost 100) helpers on the day. Our MC, Stuart Dowle, kept everyone informed of what was happening throughout the Grounds. Quickes gave us the use of their field for parking, the Rec use of their facility and the Parish Hall use of their room and their tables and chairs. Tesco Crediton provided hundreds of baps courtesy of their Community Champion, Andrew Drayton

Finally, on the financial front, the event raised £950 for local good causes, in addition to the thousands raised by the Charities themselves.

Planning now starts for 2018. If you would like to join the Organising Committee for the REVELS 2018 please do get in touch with Newton Wonder Editor, Peter Hawksley (editor@newtonwonder.net). We welcome some new faces with new ideas!!

The Revels Sporting Challenge
The Sporting Challenge entries were a little lower this year but those who participated seemed to have an enjoyable time.

There were joint winners of the Individual's competition, both coincidently called Alex - Alex Tamlin and Alex Carder.

The winners of the Team competition were the Field of Force team, led by captain,  'Chief' Keith Mitchell, who beat second placed Devon YFC by just one point. Keith intends to display the cup in the FORCE Cancer Support Centre.

The highest individual score in both competitions was 32 points, scored by Wolfy, otherwise known as Martin Edworthy from the Beer Engine A Team. Congratulations to all of the winners.

I would like to thank all the competitors for taking part and a special thanks to the organisers of the various sports who gave their time.

    Revels Review Questionnaire
The Organisers are always keen to make the Revels attractive and interesting for everyone in our community.  Whilst we are really pleased  with this year's programme, our aim is to continue developing the programme. With this in mind it would be extremely helpful if you could spare a few minutes to complete our short questionnaire on this year's Revels.
