Annabelle gains Blue belt in Jang Bong-Do
At a recent Jang Bong-Do (long Korean staff) seminar and grading in Chipping Sodbury (near Bristol), Annabelle Meakin-Lee graded to Blue belt, receiving a distinction pass and also a special grading award for excellence from Master Ogbourne from the PUMA organisation. She was grateful for the instruction and guidance/support of Mr Ashmead on and before the grading day, during months of training by herself. She performed the pattern of her grade, Jang Bong Tul Sambo, in front of the whole seminar, to rapturous applause. She then used the foam staffs and sparred a young chap her own age/height as a demonstration of staff combat. It was a great day out for Annabelle and her family and particularly satisfying to go up country and do so well on 'foreign' soil.
Annabelle attends Taekwon-do and Jang Bong-Do training at Devon Martial Arts (DMA), under the instruction of former Team GB TKD artist Mr Danny Dowling. DMA is the school of the legendary Master Black and is run by Mr Brett Dowling. . |

Village local, Annabelle Meakin-Lee, who is a British Taekwondo champion and student at Brampford Speke Primary School, is doing 30 press-ups a day for the 30 days of June in aid of Cancer Research. Touched by the loss of many folk in our village and the loss of friends and family to this horrible disease, she decided to come up with a challenge to do something positive. She regularly practices press-ups with Dave Powlesland at TKD sessions that take place in the village hall on Friday evenings. The press-ups in June will help to condition her upper body as well as doing good for charity. She will complete some press ups at school, some at TKD and some at home and every press up will be logged on her sheet by an independent witness! It would be great if everyone can donate something to this brave 9yr old's challenge. The best way to donate is via this web page:-

December 2016
Competing at the Taekwondo British Championships in Swindon, village local, Annabelle Meakin-Lee, went through a number of rounds to get to the final of the patterns competition, winning Gold to become British champion. Asked what she thought about winning, she replied "I'm proud and tried my best but I could have done better!" My medal was a bonus but my Taekwondo is what matters. She is pictured here with 8th degree, Master Gayle, event organiser. Later on at the championships, Dan ‘the Warrior’ Parker came up against a world champion in the heavyweight final. He didn’t win but took a very creditable silver medal which was incredible for someone who has little time to train. Taekwondo class is on at the village hall every Friday from 6pm, with 4th degree Instructor, Dave Powlesland. All ages and levels from beginners upwards are welcome. It's very inclusive and an excellent way to build confidence, learn self-defence and get flexible and fit. The first few visits are free, so you can try before you commit, at no cost. Dr. Simon Lee. |
