Walks in 2018
Sunday 21st January
The January walk is one way from Powderham to Exeter. We will walk from the church at the north end of the Powderham estate, up the River Exe estuary right into Exeter passing by Turf Locks and the Topsham ferry and finishing at Haven Banks opposite the Quay, where we might stop for refreshments
This is a flat walk of about 5 miles. At this time of year there should be plenty of overwintering birds on the estuary.
We will leave Newton St Cyres village car park at 9.30 am and will be sharing cars. We will take sufficient cars for one to be parked at the end of the walk to take drivers back to the other car/s left at the start.
Below are details of recent walks that the group have undertaken.
Boxing Day Walk – 26th December
We will again take the now traditional Boxing Day walk, which was led for many years by Richard and Eleanor. This is not a long or arduous walk and gives us an opportunity to get out for some fresh air and walk off some of that Christmas excess! We leave from the car park and go to the top of Sandown Lane then along the ridges, with a break to look down on the Creedy Valley. Descending via Oldway, we will head back along 50 yards of the A377 to join the footpath circling Tytheing Close, with a view of the centre of Newton, which we will reach via Court Barton Lane.
Meet at the Newton St Cyres Parish Hall Car Park at 10.00 am.
Please join us.

This month we will have a new walk for the Ramblers. This will be a walk of 4 miles starting in Bolham village north of Tiverton and walking north above the Exe Valley before turning east and south into Knightshayes and back to Bolham.

We will go through Knightshayes. The house is only about half a mile from our start point, so Ramblers will be able to make their own decisions as to whether to have a look round or get a cup of coffee or something to eat. The house (downstairs only), gardens and restaurant will be open. If you’re a member, remember to bring your National Trust card, but the restaurant is open to all.
We will meet at 9.30 am on Sunday 19 November at the Parish Hall car park in Newton St Cyres and sort out transport to Bolham.

We go from the highest point on the estate to the lowest, passing through both open fields and woods. Hopefully the bluebells will still be in bloom. The walk has a couple of steep bits but is mainly moderate in gradient taking about an hour and a half, finishing at the Stables Café for a coffee.

This is basically Walk 5 from the Newton St Cyres Walks Leaflet available from the dispenser in the Parish Hall Car Park. There is a short cut, if walkers want a shorter option.
We will meet in the Recreation Ground Car Park at 10 am. All welcome. Any queries to Jean or Roger Wilkins on 851337.
NEWTON RAMBLERS: Sunday 17th July 2016
This month’s walk will take us to Cadbury Castle, an early iron age fort with Roman and Civil War links and with spectacular views all around.
We will meet as usual at the Newton St Cyres parish hall car park at 9.30 am so that we can share cars.
We will then aim to start the walk at 10 am from Cadbury Cross on the A3072 at the north end of Cadbury village by a signpost to Cadbury Castle (Ordnance Survey map reference 907053). There is parking around the triangle in front of the houses there.
We will walk past Cadbury church and then take the footpath up to Cadbury Castle. We will then proceed past Fursdon House to Thorverton (mostly downhill) enjoying the views on the way.
We will arrange to have left a car in Thorverton to provide lifts for drivers back to the parked cars.
For any queries, please contact Rosemary Chambers (01392 851400).
All are welcome at any of these walks. We look forward to seeing you!
Please note that anyone joining these walks obviously does so at their own risk.
NEWTON RAMBLERS : Sunday 19th June 2016
The walk this month will be held on Sunday evening and not Sunday morning as usual. We will be walking on Dartmoor and if the weather is good we can expect a lovely evening walk close to the longest day.
We will meet in the Newton St Cyres village hall car park at 3.00 pm on Sunday afternoon, with a view to taking a minimum number of cars.
We will be walking on Sourton Tors with good views overlooking the west side of the moors. We will decide how long or short to make the walk depending on the weather conditions at the time.
All are welcome to join us. Any queries to Colin Joslin on 01363 776951
Please note that anyone joining these walks obviously does so at their own risk.
NEWTON RAMBLERS: Sunday 15th May 2016 - Morchard Bishop

The walk is a bit hilly in places and can be muddy after rain. It is 3 3/4 miles long but can take a good 2 1/2 hours.

NEWTON RAMBLERS: Sunday 17th April 2016
This month’s walk will be a woodland walk and will be led by John Quicke
We will start the walk at 10am at the Parish hall car park. We will then walk up into Newton Wood, probably around the Keepers area, maybe coming back through Scrawthorne and Widden Orchard. We will look at a variety of trees and plantations, with a focus on the more commercial aspects of forestry.
We should be back at the Parish hall car park by about 12.
Some of the walking will be in wet, uneven and muddy areas, with probably some short steep sections as well, so appropriate footwear is required.
All are welcome. Any queries to Rosemary Chambers on 01392 851400.
Please note that anyone joining this walk obviously does so at their own risk.
NEWTON RAMBLERS: Sunday 13th March 2016
This month we will be following footpaths around Killerton Park The walk is a relatively short one taking only about an hour and a half but what it lacks in length it gains by offering a varied terrain and great views.
We will leave the Newton St Cyres parish hall car park at 9.30 am taking the back route through Columjohn and parking in the walled garden car park at Killerton. Walkers will not have to be National Trust members as we will be using public footpaths. We will finish at the Stables Cafe (dogs allowed inside!) and be able to get a drink and socialise.
All are welcome. Any queries to Geoff Jackson on 01392 851551.

This is a circular walk taking in Otterton and Budleigh Salterton. It is an easy walk and is about 3.5 miles long. We will walk alongside the river Otter on a dedicated footpath and when we reach the road bridge over the river just short of Budleigh Salterton we will cross the river and walk back along a closed road. There is a gentle uphill slope and we will arrive back in Otterton where, if we wish, we could have a soup and wedge lunch at the mill.
We will meet at Newton St Cyres Parish Hall Car Park at 9.30 am and share cars.
For more information please ring Caroline Witts on 01392 259587
All are welcome on either of these walks.

NEWTON RAMBLERS December and January
The walk for December will take place on Boxing Day
Boxing Day Walk - 26th December 2015
We will again take the now traditional Boxing Day walk, which was led for many years by Richard and Eleanor. This is not a long or arduous walk and gives us an opportunity to get out for some fresh air and walk off some of that Christmas excess! We will leave from the Newton St Cyres car park and go to the top of Sand Down Lane and then along the ridges, with a break to look down on the Creedy Valley. Descending via Oldway, we will head back along 50 yards of the A377 to join the footpath circling Tytheing Close, with a view of the centre of Newton, which we will reach via Court Barton Lane.
Meet at the Newton St Cyres Parish Hall Car Park at 10 a.m. Please join us!
For more information please ring Rosemary or Nigel Chambers on 01392 851400

Newton Ramblers Visit to Kelly Mine
Sunday 17th May 2015
On 17th May the Newton Ramblers visited Kelly mine near Lustleigh, Kelly believed to be a corruption of a Saxon name, possibly Cadwallader. 10 of us accompanied by 2 dogs left the car park at Trenchford Reservoir and made our way across fields and down the steep path to the mine – a long way down the hill but beautiful with orchids and swathes of bluebells on the wooded hillside.
We were met at the entrance to the site by two volunteers from the Kelly Mine Preservation Trust and were divided into two groups.
Micaceous iron oxide was mined here – very shiny, soft iron oxide. The first record of the mine is from 1797 when a single man was working the mine owned by a local farmer. Later the mine was leased by a company and there were 8 people working here. It finally closed in 1951 and all the machinery was left here due to debts to the landowner.
We had a one hour tour of the mine, which lasted longer and could have easily been even longer. We saw original equipment both used at that mine and at others on Dartmoor, equipment which had been re-created by the enthusiastic volunteers, waterwheels, and a mine tramway with old trucks, and part of the mine itself complete with candles and carbide lights. We then saw the processing of the ore from mining through washing, pounding to a dust and drying and packing into barrels to be shipped to London, Wales and around the world.
A thoroughly enjoyable visit to a mine made real by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. I now know what a “buddle” is and have seen one in action!
More information about the mine on www.kellymine.co.uk and thanks go to Roger and Jean Wilkins for organising this for us.
